When it comes to knowing your HIV status, sooner is better.

Getting tested is the most important thing you can do for yourself and for others in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Knowing your status empowers you to make informed decisions. People are more likely to use caution if they know they can spread the virus. If you are negative, you can learn how to stay negative. If you are positive, you can seek treatment to live a long and healthy life.
 

HIV Prevention Program

The City of Austin Health and Human Services HIV Prevention program offers free confidential and anonymous counseling and testing for HIV, for those who are not exeriencing symptoms.

Mobile HIV Testing

The MobileHIV testing unit can be found in various locations throughout Austin. It is equipped with counselors, free HIV/STI testing, community resources, condoms, and other free items. Call 512.972.5580  to check the van'schedule.

Red Ribbon Program

The Red Ribbon program is a free testing service by appointment only. Rapid HIV tests, as well as tests for Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis and Hepatitis tests are given. The counselor can discuss techniques to help reduce the risk of potential exposures, condom negotiation with partners, and future testing recommendations.

Condom Distribution

Condom distribution locations include neighborhood centers, barber shops, liquor stores, bars, and other easily accessible local establishments.

STD Clinic

The City of Austin Health and Human Services STD Clinic provides evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. To schedule an appointment, call 512.972.5430. Clinic hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The fee for examination and treatment is $20. The clinic is located at the first floor of the RBJ Health Center, 15 Waller Street , 78702.

4 Ways to Prevent HIV

  1. Don’t Have Sex: The only sure way to avoid contracting HIV sexually is to avoid sex.
  2. Stay with One Partner: If you and your partner are both HIV negative, being faithful in your monogamous relationship eliminates your risk for HIV infection.
  3. Use Latex Condoms: If you do have sex, always use latex condoms with your partner, especially if you do not know your partner’s HIV status.
  4. Don’t Share Needles and Syringes: HIV can be spread by sharing needles and syringes. If you are using drugs, enroll in a treatment program. If you cannot stop drugs, do not share needles and syringes.

  • World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate people who have died.

February 7, 2016     National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

  • The focus of NBHAAD is to get Blacks educated about the basics of HIV and AIDS in their local communities.
